Blog 25 evaluation

When I first started this project I didn't know how it was going to plan out and was quite nervous, about doing something I had never done before. I knew it was going to end badly for me or very good.  I kept my mind open and thought about new ideas as I was doing this project, which helped me a lot to create my logo and video as I never disregarded  anyone's opinions or thoughts on how to improve my work.

Once I found and settled on the topic I wanted to do I knew from then on that it would take a lot of hard work to pull it off. It was quite an emotional topic I chose for me personally. I know I said from the beginning in my brain storm that I wouldn't make it personal or emotionally and I did but I'm very happy with my end result.

I think I did the correct time limit for everything and am glad it all got finished within the time schedule to hand it all in. I think I could have spend more time on my video and effects and made it stronger by adding more stuff to it but am happy with the overall result.

When I started this topic and project I was quite nervous as I did not have any idea for what to do at all, and when I did pick my topic I didn't actually think I would be allowed to do it, but was glad nobody told me I couldn't. When I told my teacher my topic I knew he was quite surpirsed at it and helped me improve it in ways that I didn't think of, such as leave a gap in between clips to leave suspense which actually worked with my video. The overall experience of creating it turned out better than I thought. My teacher was supportive with my choice even after knowing I was in foster care which I thought I would get judged on and never did.

I have thoroughly enjoyed this project and the learning of using new tools and software that I have never used before, but I now know how to use them and will keep using them whenever I can. After all the problems I have had such as not having a topic to use for three weeks and thinking I was behind when everyone was so ahead with this project when in fact I worked at my own paste and still got the job done just as well as they did too I believe that I have managed to create a piece of work that is up to a high standard, and that I can be proud of.

I have enjoyed this module and have to say it has been the best and most fun module I have done so far. Even though there have been times when it got tough for me and I have wanted to stop my project, or I didn't think it was skilled enough, I'm really glad that I stuck with it and saw the project through to completion.

Blog 24 Green screening

Most movies. news reporters and any even some adverts use green screens to enable them to use a large amount of effects for the users to see. An example is that an actor could be appearing to be falling off a tall building, generated by the green screen, when in reality they are actually on the ground acting as if they were falling. This will save the company a lot of money. They can also edit the characters to look smaller, bigger, better looking, uglier etc.

Another example of people using green screens is during the weather section of the news where the weatherman uses a green screen to display the map of the country with the changing weather effects. The weather reporter cannot see the green screen or the map but can still tell the weather to the viewers. This is the main reason why the new reporter will never wear green clothes as they will blend in with the green screen.

A lot of movies try to save money by using green screens which to create their special effects.A great number of movies are using them nowadays but the viewers don't realise it.

By using a green screen it can help to make a scene look and better for example if filming an outside shot and the weather is dark and cloudy, a green screen could be used instead to if the director wanted a bright sunny shot.

Blog 23 more file saving explained

I knew when I was given my assignment that my DVD case, logo and video that they all had to be saved in a specific format which I was happy to do as long as there were no problems. I also knew that if I didn't save them in these formats, they wouldn't be able to be opened in any other software so I wouldn't be able to make any changes to them whenever I wanted to.

When I was saving my files I kept in mind that I needed to be able to view my images and to be able to open them up.  I did change my file type to export it to web as, I thought that if the user didn't have the software then they couldn't view my images but, if they have internet access then they would be able to over the web.

In regards to marking, I thought that if I kept all my formatting the same then it would greatly benefit the marker because they would be able to see all my work. if certain files or images were saved in a different format, the marker may not have the software to open them.

Blog 22 File types for premiere pro

When I started my trailer I knew that I had to save it in the correct format so I could open it again and make changes whenever I wanted to. I stayed with this format all the way through my work and it turned out great with no problems for me.

I'm glad I got the correct format for my video and that no problems occurred for me when I was playing it back or when I made changes to it which I'm happy about.

Blog 21 File formats for photoshop and illustrator

When creating my images some of my files were created and saved in Photoshop format. This was quite hard for me to open up outside of University as I didn't have the software on my laptop. If I wanted to make some changes on my work I couldn't unless I was in the Tuesday or Thursday lessons.

When saving this file I did have the option to save the file for web use and format which is good idea I think because it will enable you to open the file somewhere else with internet access. This is also a good idea to use as it will let you make changes to your work and print it off as well.

Blog 20 Effects used on my video

When creating my video I experimented with a lot of the effects to see which ones would best be suited for my video. Some of the effects I used on my video were:
  • Brightness and contrast
  • Dip in black
  • Fade out and zoom
  • Razor tool
  • Audio- I used loud bass
  • Slow bur
  • Dip in white contrast
  • Cross over
  • Audio- I used balance
  • Sharpened focus
  • Credit titles
  • Blank spaces
  • Loud bass for audio effect
All these effects took me a long time to get the hang of them and to know what they all do properly. I was experimental and tried all the effects and picked out the best ones that I thought suited my video quite well. With all the effects I took my time with them and it took me a while to place them in the correct order as I wasn't sure if they suited my video, but I think they do.

Blog 19 Saving files for DVD case and DVD logo

We were all given the correct dimensions for our DVD case and logo and had to save them in the correct file formats e.g JPEG or GIF as they wouldn't be able to open in the software otherwise

When I was creating my logo and DVD case I kept in mind that I had to save them in the specific file format, and that they needed to be able to open and to be viewed by other people which hopefully they will as I'm sure I saved them all in the correctly.  Also I'm pretty sure that all my images can be opened and viewed as well. I also saved my files in Web format just in case somebody didn't have the software to view my work, they can still be able to view it on-line which is very helpful I think.

Blog 18 Feedback on my video

After I had created my DVD case, logo and video I was quite nervous to see my friends reaction to it.  I wanted their opinion on it so I could improve it more better. At first I was curious as to how they would react watching it but was pleased to see that they liked it. I looked at their videos too and in the back of my mind making small improvements on my video and was sort of comparing their video to mine. I was glad they helped me to improve my video as well as I did with theirs. The only feedback I received was to slow down my images as they were going to fast.

After explaining that I did that as affect they were then happy with the result of my effect but it did make me wonder if everyone else wouldn't like it. I thought about changing the speed of my images but went against the idea as I had put a lot of effort into making it the way it was and was happy people were noticing the effect.

I was also pleased that they liked my music and audio effect of the voice talking as I didn't think  they would and I was considering taking it out, but got told not too which made me even happier about my video.  I also added in an extra clip at the end as I had a seven second gap to fill so, I thought some credits would look good which I completely made up, and was happy that they went with the other clips I used and suited my video altogether.

Blog 17 Printing issues

After I had created my DVD case and DVD Logo, I decided I wanted to print them off as I was happy with the results of what I had created, however I did have problems doing this.

I had re-created the DVD case three times before I had it perfect and had only printed it off once but I had to re print it again as I had updated my last DVD case.  Also my other problem was that it was too big to fit in to my DVD case on the first attempt which wasn't good so for my second I re-jiggled about my logo and made it smaller which helped. I then printed it off again the second time to find it was still to big. Due to my annoyance I asked my teacher if it mattered whether the DVD was actually on the DVD case and he told me no it can be submitted in paper form. This is now how I have left it and will hand it in in a folder that is presentable which I think is a better idea than in a DVD case now.

I had no problems with the dimensions for my DVD logo which I am very proud of.

Blog 16 Overcoming problems with my trailer video

There were quite a lot of issues when creating my video and I found these quite challenging to over come such as:

One minute limit time on the video
  • Mark in and out at the correct times (was hard to get accurate correct sometimes)
  • Removing audio at the length I wanted
  • Adding in suitable effects to match each clip
  • Choosing the right age rating for my video
I think the most challenging problem I overcame was the one minute time limit. This is because it was so short. I had to fit all my clips into that little time frame which was quite hard for me to do. I also found it hard as I wanted to use more clips in my video but had to chose between a few of them and which I though was a better fit for my video.

When I chose the sections of which clips I wanted to use from the videos, I found it quite hard to get the hang of using mark in and mark out but, soon learnt that if you hit the mark in button too late my clip wouldn't be what I intended it to be. This would lead me to have to re do it again a few times to get it right. If I didn't get the right timing on the clips I would have to go back and redo it in order to reach the one minute time limit. When I got all my clips to where I wanted them to be and got their marks in and marks out correct and inserted it into my video, I felt really proud of myself knowing that I picked the best clips and that I thought that I had made something that was very good.

As my topic was quite sensitive I didn't know or have any idea of where or what age rating I should use or think about using for my video. I did some research into what would be the appropriate audience age.

Blog 15 Updates on my progress so far!

It took me a while to decide what videos to use because, I had to do research into suitable videos that had to be good enough for me to understand the videos and know that I could use their clips and use them in my video knowing they fitted well to my topic.

I did a lot of background research into foster care as I have a personal connection to this topic due to me being in foster care myself. I wanted to know more history about it such as what was fostering like in the olden days and how much has it changed now a days. In some of my video clips its shows some foster children being treated in the foster care system twenty - thirty years ago and how they are being treated now.

To choose the right videos clips I made sure I picked out stuff that stood out to me and affected my emotions in a good way which I knew everyone else who saw it would be affected like me when I watched it.  I knew in my mind that it was trailer and not a movie and because I only had a certain time limit on my video, I think I started off quite weak but then my video got stronger and I hope that it ended on a good note. I never knew what to start off with as I wanted to make a good impression with my video but finally chose my clips and am proud of it. I'm also proud of my ending too as I finally learnt how to make my titles for my video name.

At first I Googled foster care videos and found a lot of documentaries that were very helpful to me and gave me a lot of historical information. I found this one American foster care documentary that just fascinated me enough to use some of their clips and amazed me on how much information and the pictures she used. I also found a trailer for a foster care movie that was out last year which affected me also as it was about a little girl who got taken away from her family and it showed the good and bad side of her life which I decided also to use in my video. The second reason I decided to use this video was because of the words she was saying which was what affected me the most. I thought this would be a good idea to use in my video as I thought it would be unique as no one else would have audio in their video.

Once I had chosen both the videos and clips that I wanted to use in my video, I had to take some time to decide how I would fit them together as one was a documentary and another was a movie trailer. It was challenging to put my clips together and to learn to take the voice audio out of the documentary clip which I had to Google how to do.

I decided to keep the same music for the foster care movie trailer as I thought this fitted well with my clips. It was hard to fit two clips together side by side both from different things and showing different stories but hopefully I think I pulled it off.

After 4 weeks of non stop sorting of my time limit and audio sounds I finally had my video and clips together which made me very happy and proud.

Blog 13 Overcoming Problems

The only problems I had were choosing between which video clips I was using to base my video on, this was quite difficult for the topic I chose.  Due to my topic being sensitive I had to spend quite a lot of time re-doing my video to get it accurate which made it a bit emotionally for people to watch.  At first I did not know how many clips I would use to fill up my timer of one minute for my video. All I cared about was that my video clips all suited each other and matched up along side each other.

Another problem I found was the time keeping of one minute as I kept going over it by twoseconds or under it by one second, getting it right took me two. I had to stretch out some of my video clips and edit more of my audio which was hard for me to do as I had never done this before. But I think with more practice I will spend more time on this as it is only there for a draft until I decide what music and audio I will use for my whole video.

A different problem I had was getting the right effects to match my clips as this is what took the longest for me to get it right. I had to practice on using the effects and getting to know which ones were the right ones to fit my video clips. We practiced using these video effects on videos given to us in lesson, which was very helpful I thought as this made us more confident with using the video effects in our own videos.

Blog 12 Legal and ethical laws

Legal and ethical laws- copy right law.

When I was copying and using my images I thought very hard about the copyright law and to change the images in such a way that they were not the same as they were when I copied them.  There are many different opinions on this and some can be seen as good and bad.  Especially when it involves enhancing and highly manipulating an image to make it look better by enhancing features so that it can attract more customers to buy that product.  Some people will buy a product even if it doesn't do what it says it should do causing them to have wasted their money. This is highly used in television adverts, magazines, clothing adverts.  Images in every day settings are highly manipulated to make them look more appealing.

For example any "wrinkle cream adverts" they will go through great lengths to advertise their products and make them look as good as they can. This can bedone by hiding the models wrinkles on their faces which will portrait their product to work even, though they have just use Photoshop editing to hide these.  By using younger models as well I think makes the company look desperate as they are not portraying their product on an old enough person who has experienced wrinkles. For that reason making their product look good to customers by using younger models is deceiving I think.

The ethics law has remained in place for companies to think about whether what they are doing is right or wrong for their customers, and whether they are allowed to sell their goods to their clients.  When changing images by using Photoshop it is deceiving for customers and the ethics laws stands in place for companies to only be allowed to change certain images but, not so much as the images are no longer the original image. Some companies have been fined and stopped from changing their images.

It is important for companies to have an agreement with the owner of the original image or, the model's permission to change their image as if they don't the company can be sued and get in a lot of trouble.  When changing someone's picture the company will need their permission as the copyright law is in place and can get the company in trouble. However if the person is just using the image for messing around with and gaining experience that is fine, as long as the image doesn't go on-line or be used for other people to see. If this happens you must be sure that you have the person's permission, this can be lengthy job and can take time but will be worth it in the end.

I don't really need to think about these laws as I'm using a google image but editing it to make it my own image.

Blog 11 Feedback

After creating my disc label, front page and my back page I received feedback on my work, for how to improve it and what changes I need to make to make it better.

After a few weeks of creating my images I finally decided on an image to place on my DVD cover and case. I was ready for feedback even though I felt like I hadn't done much work and hadn't created my video at this stage and knew for sure I wouldn't get a pass.

We got paired up in class and we took it in turns to look at each other's work and to give feedback on improvements. The given requirements were provided as:

  • Set up the correct Photoshop File
  • Correct size
  • DPI
  • Selection tools
  • Filters
  • Layers (named well and organised well)
  • Layer transparency
  • Levels
  • Guides
  • Effects applied to photos
  • A render in an appropriate format

For the given requirements I received the following feedback:
Set up a Photoshop file - Correct Colour. Correct size - Correct size set up DPI - Correct DPI used  (300). Selection tools - Selection tools have been used to place and crop images. Filters - No filters used but may be added in at the end. Layers - A few layers used and named accordingly. I suggested using folders to group them and to make workspace more efficient. Layer Transparency - No use of transparency but will be used later. Levels - No use of levels. Guides -Guides are not finished. Effects applied to photos - No effects used. A render in appropriate format - Image has been saved as JPEG.
My other comments of improvements were guides need to be set up so that you can see where the edge and spine of the cover should be. For the back cover take a look at how the other movie covers look and try to implement it in to you final production design.
Then came the feedback for my DVD disc label cover.
The given requirements were:
  • Pen tool
  • Type tool
  • Placing images
  • Brushes
  • Clipping masks
  • Guides
  • Layers
  • Transparencies
  • Text wrap
  • A render in an appropriate format

For the given requirements I received the following feedback;
Pen tool - No will consider using this.
Type tool - Used for logo (text)
Placing images - Yes a few images were placed on disc
Brushes - Wasn't used
Clipping mask - Not used
Guides - Guides were set up correctly.
Layers - Layers were used for images and adjustments. Also have named them correctly.
Transparencies - No but will consider it.
Text wrap - No but will consider using it.
A render in an appropriate format - Not yet.

I can see now that I have alot of improvements to do as I didn't do much work then but think I have progressed onwards and made my changes to improve my work. My comments for my DVD disc label were that the DVD cover image can be used as background for the CD. Also logo can be improved a bit more to show the use of different features and effects.

The person marking our work was looking for things in what we had used and where we had used them.

I was given 29% and said that  little evidence of use of learning resources. No self direction, with little evidence of contribution to team work. Very weak academic/intellectual skills and significant difficulties with structure/expression. Little evidence of practical/professional skills. I agree with being given this grade but am hoping that I can improve my work and make the changes I need to make to up my grade.

Blog 10 creating logo for dvd case

I have created images using shapes in Illustrator and decided to use them as my logo on my DVD. This is because my theme is foster care so I wanted to make it a childish theme. I used different shapes and themes to create the perfect logo which took me three attempts to correct and to get it perfect.

I learnt how to create shapes within each other as well as joining shapes together which will help me if I need to join any image together. I did this by placing three different shapes along side each other and then clicking the window option in the top menu bar. Then I clicked on the Path Finder option which allowed me to eliminate the shapes I didn't need or want and enabled me to remove these shapes with the delete button. I would need to keep doing this if I wanted to join different shapes together more. I will in future need to practice using this tool in order to gain greater skill with it.

This is just a rough guess as to what my logo will look like but there may be changes made and it could change completlely

Blog 9 3D art

Today I have learnt how to create a 3D picture in illustrator and make it into more of  a 3D picture. I didn't do much on this as my computer froze and I couldn't complete this task but, thought I would still put it on here as it was good evidence of my attempt at trying 3D art.

Blog 8 creating DVD case

I have designed and drawn the lay out of my front page and back page DVD cover. The mind maps below show what was needed to be placed onto my DVD cover.  I have done this so I can check off what I need to so I don't miss anything out.

It took me a while to decide what to place on my front page and back page as I had to look at what things were on other DVD's covers to help me decide what to place on my DVD cover. I think I have followed what is needed to be placed on my DVD cover.

Day 7 creating my DVD case

I have started to create my front page cover for my DVD  case and have used a picture of Google images but then placed it into Photoshop and changed it so it follows the Copyright laws. It took me awhile to pick the right picture as I wanted to get it right and for it fit in with the Copyright law as well as be fun and not have any children face in the picture.

When I decided on picking animated pictures which I thought would fit my preference better than a normal picture of someone's face. After picking the right animated picture, I view this picture in full view, I then right clicked on the image and clicked on snip tool which cut around the edges of the picture creating it into my own image.  I then placed this into Photoshop and changed the colour background of my front cover.

To make it feel more original and more like my own work I also added a background colour to my front page and back page. The colours I have chosen will make the logo picture stand out out for the user's eyes and will catch their attention.

I have uploaded a recent picture of my final piece of my front page and back page that i chose to finally stay with.  I will not be making any more changes to my front page or back page and I  feel pretty comfortable with this final piece.

Blog 6 information about foster care

I have now decided and gathered some ideas on how to make my DVD cover and am still gathering images I would like to use on my DVD. As my topic is a sensitive one and not many people know a lot about foster care, it can be misunderstood and misplaced as something bad when infact it can help improve someone's life.

Foster care only started in the 19th century but there were no laws created about it until the 20th century in the UK. It was called back then "boarding out" and just like many other countries foster care, adoption or short term care was always an option for people. Admittedly it has got a lot better over the years as there have been more laws created for the child's protection.

For those who don't know foster care, it is a way of providing a safe and welcome home for a child/young person (up to the age of 18) where they are looked after until they are ready To leave or when an court order has ran out.  Not all reasons for foster placements to end are because the court order ends, it can be because of it being short placement. This is where their placement is for a short period of time and can be between 1 night to 6 months. Short placement is an emergency accommodation.

There are different reasons for people going into foster care but no matter how hard the situation is for the child/young, there will always be a room waiting for them to keep them safe and secure. All foster children/young people have different situations and it's the foster carers job role to keep them safe and secure and to treat them like their own daughters/sons.

The longer the foster child/young person stays with their foster carer they are more likely to feel attachment; it can be heartbreaking for the foster carer to have to say goodbye to the foster child/young person.  Some foster children/young person can have different experiences of foster care depending on which foster company they are with, as different foster company have different rules and do things differently.

Blog 5 filter colours, colour reference, patch tool, heal tool, spot healing brush

I have learnt today in class Thursday 12th February 2015 to filter the colours and change our own colour reference. I also learnt how to use the patch tool and heal tool along with the spot healing brush tool.

We had a picture of two people sat on a beach and we had to deleted one of them, and use the patch tool to cover the space with sea background so it all looked the same. I also used the spot healing brush tool to make sure all of their body was gone so there was no evidence of this person existing.

When the person was gone I then used the patch tool again to convert the empty space to match the background of the picture so that there was no empty space in the picture.

Blog 4 video's ideas

I have still decided to stick with my foster care idea and have decided to go with the genres of drama and comedy which I've brain stormed in the mind map seen below. This will help me to create my DVD cover case as I will know what to base my DVD cover on. It will help me to also plan what target audience I am going for and will help with the age rating of my movie.

I will need to develop this idea more and think of how I will create the Photoshop image for my logo and front and back pages. I chose this idea because I know a lot about foster care as I've lived through it so want to make this topic not personal but fun and loving and not emotional.

I will need to decide what picture, colour and effects I will now use on my DVD case. Once I have finally made my mind up I will then start creating my front page, back page and logo for my DVD.

Blog 3 using crop tool, burn tool, dodge tool, colours layers, magic wand

On Thursday 5th February  in lesson I started to learn how to use photoshop tools on an imagne.  I learned how to use the burn tool, dodge tool, different colours layers,  magic wand and crop tool. This helped me develop my skills using photoshop and will encourage to do more research on photoshop tools which I will need these for the images on my dvd case and logo in the future.

To improve my skills and knowledge of photoshop I was given an imagne of a person in lesson to edit in Photoshop and to make him look younger.  To do this I used the crop tool, dodge tool, burn tool, different colours along with heal hand. This let me experiment with the different Photoshop tools. I will attach a photo of the imagne I edited. I will need these tools to use on my images and photos along with editing videos.

By using these tools it made me feel more confident about using them further on in my assignment when adding imagnes into my video and for my logo, front page and back page. This will definely come in handy when creating my back page and inserting different logo's on my back page.

Blog 2 original ideas planning started

I have had a sit down and thought about some ideas and sketched ideas for thr two but eventually chosen to do DVD case as it is more interesting to me. I have attached my images that I've drawn today and will be creating them in Photoshop. My images will have different filters, layers, colours and effects to create the best photo possible to fit on my DVD case.

I was told to choose a topic that I know well and know a lot about so I've decided to do my about foster care. This was a tough decision for me as my original idea was about animals and I came to realise I didn't know much about animals.

In my picture I have drawn all my ideas of what types of video games I would based my cover on. Also I have drawn all my ideas for what I need to use in my DVD case wrap, and have come up with the conclusion it is more interesting to me to create a DVD case wrap.

Blog 1 Project starts

I have been given an assignment to create a DVD package for a film or video game of my choice. I first decided to choose a video game but thought that would be too complicated to create so have now stuck with creating a DVD package. This will be created and made in Photoshop and will contain limited amounts of copyright pictures and information.

I don't have any ideas yet but will consider some over the weekend and should have a sketch idea of what I'm creating and making for my DVD cover. My image will have different layers of colours and filters along with different effects. It will also help develop my strengths of using the featured tools in Photoshop which will help me in the future for when I next use Photoshop.  I will upload pictures and drawings of my ideas.  I will also upload an image of my DVD cover.

I need to also create a DVD disc label which will be created in Photoshop and contain a logo.  I will have to demonstrate using pen tool,  type tool,  placing images,  brushes,  clipping masks,  guides, layers, transparencies, text wrap. I will submit this in the correct format when I've completed it.

I need to create a short video as well which will be edited in Premiere. I am allowed to import previous elements or short clippings from different videos which can be edited through using photoshop or illustrator.
